FILIPINO RECRUITED TO PLAY IN AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Jason Castro First Filipino to Play in the NBL

Last week, Filipino Jason Castro was recruited by Australian National Basketball League club Singapore Slingers - and will become the first pinoy to play in that league. Hopefully, it would spur more Filipinos to play abroad - get the necessary skills and upgrade their level of play. In the end, the ultimate beneficiary would be the national team. The Argentinians did this, sending their best players to play in Europe where they honed their skills and kept up with the trends in the game. As a result, they successfully produced a powerful national team capable to beating any team in the world.

Castro signed up with the first Asia-based club in the NBL , Singapore Slingers, after the team's managing director Bob Turner and operations manager Michael Johns flew to Manila and finalized a deal. The team had been pursuing the 2006 and 2007 MVP of the Philippine Basketball League for some time before they finally nailed it down.

Turner said "when we saw Jason last year (in Singapore) we knew he was the one we were looking for. We really worked to find a talent from the region and we were not surprised that we found him here in the Philippines." source
